About Kybella

How does Kybella work?
Kybella is administered in our office by injection. The actual procedure takes about 30 minutes and requires a consultation for approval as a good candidate prior to scheduling treatment.
After assessing the area to be treated, several tiny injections are administered directly into fat under the chin. It begins to dissolve fat immediately by using deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. The dissolved fat is then processed through your body’s natural metabolism.
What should I expect for a Kybella visit?
Patients should take 800mg of Ibuprofen one hour prior to treatment; we also use anesthetic cream to the area for one hour prior to treatment and an ice pack to comfort the area during treatment.
Downtime occurred most commonly after the first treatment session for most patients. Normal activities should be able to be resumed, but swelling of the chin area is likely to occur. It is recommended to wear a chin strap with an ice pack for a few nights after treatment and elevate head to reduce swelling.
Patients can experience numbness, redness, nodules, bruising and firmness at injection sites after treatment, which usually resolves over 4-5 weeks. Some patients have also experienced a tightening of the skin in the area.
We advise avoiding aspirin or aspirin-containing products two weeks before your appointment. It is important to tell us if you take blood thinners.
Most Kybella treatments require 2-4 treatment sessions (for most patients, depending on the amount of fat and improvement desired). Permanent results should be noticeable in 6 weeks. Once the desired results are achieved, further treatment is not expected.
